What is a dental implant?

An implant is an artificial tooth which looks and feels like the real thing.

An artificial root, made from titanium replaces the root of a missing natural tooth. It can be placed in either the upper or lower jaw and will bond with bone after a period of time. Dental implants can be used to replace single or multiple missing teeth.

If you have problems with loose dentures, implants can be used to stop movement and make your dentures more comfortable, secure and effective.

• Appearance and smile: When teeth have been lost jawbone will shrink which can cause signs of ageing. Dental implants can help prevent this and when restored with crowns, bridgework or dentures can be almost impossible to distinguish.
• Saves healthy teeth: With traditional bridgework, teeth either side of the gap of the missing tooth must be ground down to provide the support for the bridge. Dental implants remove the need to remove healthy tooth tissue.
